Hidden Electrical Dangers in Your Home
Let us help protect your family...

  Old button meter socket

If you have one of these old sockets give us a call.  We can take a look at it for you and make sure it's still safe.  If it is not, we can replace it.

Damaged service cable, a major hazard

Picture
If you have an old cable wire that is frayed or cracked, that is a major hazard. It means there is most likely water running in to your meter socket and service panel in your house which could cause a fire.  It can also mean exposed HOT electrical wires which can cause electrocution.

 Old fuse panel

If you have a panel that looks like this, most likely it needs to be replaced. The electrical circuits should be checked as well for safety. New and improved wiring methods are placed into code every 3 years for the safety of the homeowner.

A cord that won't stay plugged in

Picture
Have a cord that won't stay plugged in? It should be replaced. Loose connections cause arcing which could damage an appliance or start a fire.  Over the years, I have seen  many melted outlets from loose connections.

Circuit breaker keeps tripping

Picture
If your breaker or fuse keeps tripping, there is a problem with the circuit..  Please don't keep resetting the circuit. Repeat tripping could cause a fire from the arcing that occurs from damaged wires or loose connections.

Light fixture that flickers

Picture
A light that flickers could be caused by a variety of reasons.  These include a loose connection, a damaged wire or high amperage. Left uncorrected this can lead to various electrical problems.

Smoke alarms and carbon dioxide detectors

Picture
Don't have these in your house?  We recommend you give us a call so we can give you an estimate.  There are wireless and traditional hard wired detectors.  Smoke detectors can be hard wired through the house so they all sound at the same time, or wireless smoke detectors can  be frequency  linked to each other; which saves time running wire and cutting holes.  Need a carbon dioxide detector that works with your smoke alarm to warn you in a emergency?  We can do that too.

Cloth wiring in your attic

Knob and tube wiring in your attic is not safe if it has insulation over it. The temperature rating is not high enough to withstand the heat build up and it will fray, crack, and become  brittle.  This can cause the wire to become exposed and create a fire hazard.   Knob and tube also means you have no equipment ground to keep you safe.

Lack of GFCI protection

Picture
GFCIs Protect you from electrocution. They should be installed in any area that has water present.  The devices are made to stop the electrical current when there is an imbalance load between the neutral conductor and hot conductor.

Are your fixture bulbs sized right?

Picture
Always make sure you put the correct bulb size in your lighting fixture.  The incorrect size will cause excessive heat build up and damage the fixture wires as well as the permanent wires.  If you are using the new fluorescent bulbs please make sure you also size them correctly and they are used in the proper settings.  For example, some bulbs cannot be on a dimmer or be in a  enclosed fixture.

Recently updated codes to keep you safe by the NEC & MRC

  • The Michigan Residential Code (MRC) has placed a new code into affect that requires new tamper resistant receptacles on all new residential construction. These receptacles have a built in shutters to keep kids safe.
  • The electrical industry has improved circuit breakers with a new ARC FAULT protection breaker.  This breaker protects against arcing which can cause a fire. Electrical Arcs cause 40,00 fires a year.  Standard breakers only protect against overloads & short circuits.
  • Improved receptacles for outdoor use that are weather resistant are now required.  They keep water away from contact points.  As mentioned above, water and electricity are not a good mix.

At Signature Wiring, we are committed to keeping up to date on the current codes and safety concerns so that we can provide you with a peace of mind that your home is electrically safe and sound.
